Anger makes its own rules. You don’t have to obey them. A story –
You’re out with friends some evening and have had a great time. The night has come to an end and you all say your goodbyes and go your separate ways. You decide that you’re not very far from home and you decide to walk. Unfortunately, on your way you run into some thug who decides to mug you. He has a gun.
What does he say to you? Does he say, “Don’t be afraid, because if you are, I am going to shoot.”? Or, “Don’t go feeling angry on me, because then I will have to shoot you.”? Probably not.
He – or she, it could be anyone – will say something like, “Reach for the sky.”, or “Don’t you dare make a false move.” (What is a false move, anyway?).
This is an intelligent robber. Our masked marauder knows that you are not able to control how you feel. If someone sticks a gun in your face, it would be normal to feel afraid. It would be normal to feel angry, too, wouldn’t it?
Even if you are afraid or feel anger, you can follow those orders in the second paragraph. Even if you are mad or afraid, you can still put your hands up in the sky. You can still stay still. Of course you can, there is some clown in front of you with a dangerous weapon. You could even be thinking, “This asshole can’t do this to me.” And at the same time have your hands up in the air.
Do you see what I’m getting at?
